“Los Americans,” is an 8-part series that focuses on a Latino family in the suburbs. The beautifully shot and edited episodes feature outstanding writing and direction by Dennis Leoni of ”Resurrection Boulevard” fame. Leoni has assembled an all-star cast, including Esai Morales, Lupe Ontiveros and Raymond Cruz of “The Closer.” I have to admit it was my first time checking out a show available solely on the web. What I discovered was first-rate story telling and acting. The Valenzuela’s are like many families; they are linked by blood…and commitment to each other. Sure, they struggle with issues that face all modern families; raising children, how to stay connected to each other and financial pressure in a rugged economy. But other themes are decidedly Latino-American. Leoni adeptly weaves in themes of cultural assimilation, and clashes of class and language in America today. I especially enjoyed the relationship that exists between the main character played by Esai Morales (Lee Valenzuela) and his mother, Lupe Ontiveros. Lee is an acculturated Latino…some people would label a “sell-out.” But at the end of the day the earnestness of the lead male character shines through. Ontiveros remains as the “old school Latina.” So many Latinos will see their mother, their favorite Nina or Tia in that character. I know I did. Down to the pivotal scene shot in the local catholic church. (As an aside, the entire series was shot in Santa Clarita where I grew up. That church was my childhood parish!) “Los Americans” is an original production of One Economy Corporation. The web series was funded by a grant. And offers an educational component as well. The idea is to promote broadband and technology to help people improve their everyday lives. It was my pleasure to lead a panel discussion with the cast and crew last week.
